About
The Gigawatt Company

Since 2011, The Gigawatt Company S.A. has been expanding its engineering services. One of its founders, Dr. Mario Sagastume Mena (PhD, MBA, Mechanical Engineer), worked closely with Doyle Brewington's company Powertube on non-traditional geothermal power using Organic Rankine Cycle technology. That experience gave the company the knowledge and inspiration to formally launch in 2023.

Our goal is to lead Guatemala toward an advanced energy future. We provide high enthalpy geothermal baseload power while benefiting local communities and protecting the environment. We serve electricity distributors and energy-intensive industries, with a major focus on lowering prices for end consumers.

Our team has over 30 years of experience in geothermal, hydroelectric, biomass, mining, cement, solar, and other industries. We know the regional electricity market deeply. Our main focus is baseload power generation, and with molten salt technology, we are ready to lead the market.

After fifteen years of continuous effort, our international partnerships are delivering real results including the world's first molten salt geothermal plant and the region's first green ammonia and hydrogen plant. We are also developing new projects for data centers and cold storage, strengthening our leadership in energy transition and decarbonization.

Clients, partners and high tech providers around the world

Throughout the last 4 years, we have partnered with various companies and organizations on engineering our flagship projects (Green hub Geothermal/Data Center/Ammonia/Hydrogen/Cooling Storage Facilities). We've done it almost all, from collaborations with other engineering firms to successfully completed solutions for corporate clients.

Now we are on the path to built FOAK (First Of A Kind) Molten Salt Geothermal power plant on earth and FOAK Ammonia/Hydrogen production plant from Geothermal in central america. Take a look at our full list of technology providers that we trust to work in projects around the world.

SUPER CRITICAL TEMPERATURES MOLTEN SALT ENERGY COLLECTION SYSTEMS

AMERICAN GEOPOWER

Molten Salts have a history of reliable performance in the energy industry since the 1950s.  Elements used in molten salts for thermal applications include but are not limited to: sodium, calcium, potassium, fluoride,  lithium, sodium, zinc,  magnesium, and boron. The most widely used varieties are nitrate-based mixtures. Depending on the specific use, the blends are formulated for optimal  specific heat capacity, thermal conductivity, melting point, and density.  AGP's patents are inclusive of all varieties of molten salts.

  • -Molten salt is an excellent Heat Transfer Fluid (HTF).

  • -It is environmentally benign, non-toxic, and non-flammable.

  • -It lasts over 30 years with little degradation.

  • - It is 2-4 times as thermally conductive as water.

  • -It has a low vapor pressure.

  • -It has a high specific heat capacity, and only loses 1% of its heat per day in a properly insulated tank.

  • -It is very stable above 400°C and, depending on the species of molten salt, has working temperatures from 65°C – 1000°C.

  • In case you're wondering, even common table salt (NaCl), when heated enough, becomes a molten salt.  However, its very high melting point of around  800ºC precludes it from being an option for geothermal processes where temperatures of  less than 400ºC are much more practical.

Siemens Energy

With over 150 years of experience and located in 90 countries, we have a global team of 99,000 people who share a common passion: finding answers to the energy challenges of today and tomorrow. The diversity of this team, together with the collaboration with strategic partners, has allowed us to address the complexity of today's energy landscape, ranging from conventional to renewable energy, grid technology, storage and the electrification of industrial processes.

Our mission is to support companies and countries with what they need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and make energy reliable, affordable and sustainable. We energize society.

PIETRO FIORENTINI

The extensive experience of the Pietro Fiorentini Group stems from the union of the forces that comprise it. We are committed to sustainability and efficiency, promoting innovation for the well-being of society and the environment. We provide products, systems, and services to optimize the energy supply chain, integrating new energy carriers to accelerate the ecological transition, along with innovative solutions for the water supply chain and environmental management. All of this is supported by a software infrastructure capable of monitoring and managing data. Our goal? To value resources.

VALLOUREC NEW ENERGIES

Engineering tubular solutions for geothermal wells:

Geothermal has proven potential as a clean energy source that can be accessed 24/7. Geothermal energy can be used distributed through turbines for power generation, or feed directly into district cooling or heating systems. However, the investment required to drill geothermal wells is high, and operators have traditionally offset these costs by using basic tubulars.

This approach can be insufficient, and a potentially risky choice for operators in the long-term. Since geothermal wells are meant to operate for decades at a time, their tubulars must be able to consistently withstand a harsh environment.

Choosing the right tubular solutions is critical to ensuring resistance to corrosion, erosion, changing temperature cycles and more, and can help owners optimize the costs of their geothermal assets.
